As tragic as a playwright Donald Fowlerpassed away in May 2020, it continues to live through the friends and aficionados who wanted its inspiration to continue. Thanks to the implementation of Donald Fowler Memorial Theater Arts Fund at the Dallas Foundation, grants were created to “provide seed grant support to artists living in the Dallas Metroplex, furthering their realization of new theatrical works, including plays and musicals”.
The first grant was awarded in 2021 to Holly Doubetwhose “38 Minutes” subsequently received a workshop at the Sammons Center for the Arts in December 2021.
Now representative of the Fowler Fund Nicolas “Nick” Even announced that Adam C. Wrightt and his musical “Another Night at the Crescent” have been nominated to receive “the amount of $5,000 to assist with the initial costs of individual theatrical creation and review”.
After being informed of the award, Adam said, “It is an honor to be selected for this year’s Donald Fowler Arts Fund grant. I have worked with Donald for over 20 years, most recently on the score and preparation for parts of his musical “Creep” at the Watertower Theatre. Knowing the level of his creativity, his compositions and his work ethic, it is inspiring to know that he continues to encourage and support me as he always has before. I hope to do him proud, and I’m excited to get to work this summer on my first set of rewrites for “Another Night at the Crescent.”
Before you assume Adam’s work is about Uptown’s Crescent Court, rethink that idea. Inspired by 1930s and 1940s jazz, Adam’s “Another Night at the Crescent” is set inside the Crescent Moon, a Manhattan nightclub where “a mysterious singer and her backup trio weave a spell of romance for eight lonely souls”.
Donald would have loved the script and hopefully those who see Adam’s musical in the future too.
For those interested in applying for the 2023 scholarship, they will be accepted from January 2023, with the next scholarship recipient announced in Spring 2023.
